2019 Summer Reading Information – Kids


How to Register

Registration opens June 1st! Kids’ Summer Reading: A Universe of Stories is for birth through 6th grade. Please visit this link to register. We received a grant this year to try using Beanstack registration.  

 

Read and Bead

At any point between June 1st and August 17th you can register at the link above. Once you have registered, please stop by the library to pick up your reading log. Instead of recording minutes read for weekly prizes, registered participants can earn beads and create a statement piece that will show off your summer accomplishment. Start with a necklace chain and a brag tag, then keep adding beads all summer long as you read add to your log. Every participant will also be eligible for a variety of prizes. Winners will be chosen at random. The weekly prize available to everyone will be the choice of a free book from our book cart.

Teddy Bear Picnic

Wednesday, June 19th, 11-12pm, open to all ages. No registration is required. 

Teddy Bear lovers of all ages are invited to Norfolk Public Library’s 1st Annual Teddy Bear Picnic. Bring your teddy bear or favorite toy, a picnic lunch, and a beach blanket or towel to sit on. 

 

Harry Potter Day

Friday, June 21st, 1-3pm, grades 4-6, registration is required. Register here today!

Magic is coming to the library. Join us for an afternoon of Harry Potter fun with crafts, a scavenger hunt, and food!

A Universe of Stories with Jungle Jim
Thursday, July 11th, 2-3pm. Ages 3-10 with an adult, no registration required. 

Space-themed balloon magic show features rocket propulsion science, celebrates the moon landing, Star Wars Jedi Training, and a 6-foot galaxy explosion!

Rolie Polie Guacamole Family Concert

Tuesday, July 16th, 6:15-7:15pm, Community Room.

All ages are welcome, no registration required. 

Concert featuring this award-winning “kindie” band from Brooklyn, NY. Rolie Polie Guacamole performs a high energy, interactive show that’s a mix of funk, rock and folk music mashed into original tunes about natural living, eating healthy and staying active! Co-sponsored by the Friends of the Library and the Norfolk Recreation Department.

 

Design a World

Thursday, July 18th, 4-5pm, grades 3-6, registration is required. Register here, beginning June 27th.

Learn about what factors make a planet livable. Why do people live on Earth but not Saturn? Then design your own planet and paint it on Styrofoam spheres.

 

Flying High Dogs

Saturday, July 20th, 11-12pm, Town Hill, open to all ages, no registration is required. 

Come have fun with Mike Piazza and his four flying Frisbee dogs!

 

 

Night Sky by the Museum of Science

Thursday, July 25th, ages 5 and up (adults too!). Registration for a time slot is required, please limit your visit to one session. Registration opens 7/4.

Night Sky is a 30-minute immersive program using an indoor planetarium that teaches audiences how to find celestial objects in their own nighttime sky. Inside the planetarium, participants will observe a realistic model of the nighttime sky.

Four identical sessions will be available. Please limit your visit to one session. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Ed the Wizard’s Rocket and Airplane Workshop

Wednesday, July 31st, 2-3pm. Grades 2 and up (Younger siblings welcome, but MUST be accompanied/assisted by a grown-up.), registration is required. Register here, beginning 7/10.

Ed the Wizard and his Rocket Building Workshop will be blasting off at the Norfolk Public Library. Build your own Air Powered Rocket and Airplane while learning the basic properties of flight and some flying history. Then, test your skills for: flight length, flight accuracy, controlled banks, turns, and stunts.

 

Galaxy Shirts

Thursday, August 1st, 4:30-5:30, Grades 3-6.

Create the galaxy on a shirt! Bring a black cotton shirt and learn how to create this unique print.

Please bring a black cotton shirt with you. While supplies last.

 

Mr. Vinny’s Puppet Show

Tuesday, August 6th, 4-5pm, Community Room

Ages 3-9 with an adult, no registration required.

Silly and surprising and very interactive! Kids use their heads to help tell the story of “The 12 Lil’ Pigs & the Big Bad Pineapple” and play the game “What’s that Shadow?”

Wednesday, August 7th, 3-6pm, Grades 3 and up. Registration is required. Register here, beginning July 17th.

Tales for Goslings

Mondays, 11:30-12:00, Storyhour/craft room.

Ages 0-5 with an adult, no registration required.

An interactive program for babies, toddlers, and caregivers with music and rhymes galore!

 

Music with Miss Jenn

Tuesday 6/18, Wednesdays: 6/26, 7/3, 7/10, 7/17, 7/24, 7/31, 10:00—10:45, Community Room.

Ages 2-5 years with an adult, no registration required.

Beach Blanket Story Time

Tuesdays 11:00—11:30,  Town Hill.

Ages 0-5 with an adult, no registration required.

Bring your beach blanket and join Miss Meghan on Town Hill for a fun summer story time. If the weather is poor, story time will be held in the storyhour/craft room.  

 

Bubble Party – NEW TIME!

Wednesdays, 2-2:30pm, Town Hill. Please note, there will be no program on 7/31.

All ages, no registration required.

Bubbles, bubbles, everywhere! Enjoy a half hour of nothing but bubbles and fun music. In the event of inclement weather the program will not be held. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library. 

 

Fun in the Sun Multi-age Storytime

Thursdays, 11-1:30am, Geared towards ages 2-6 but all ages are welcome (an adult must be present), no registration is required.

Everyone is welcome for stories and songs with Miss Courtney! Bring a blanket and enjoy the summer weather on Town Hill. If the weather is poor, story time will be held in the storyhour/craft room. 

 

NEW! Pajama Story Time

Thursdays, 6:30-7pm, ages 0-5 with an adult.

Wear your pajamas and bring your favorite toy. Join Miss Meghan for this new evening program of stories and songs.
