How to Register

Registration opens June 5! Teen Summer Reading: Build a Better World is for grades 7-12. Please visit this link to register.

If you registered last year, you can use your same login information or reset your password. If you are a new registrant, click on the text that says “Join here!” and fill out the required fields. You may begin logging your minutes on Sunday, July 9th. The program runs from Sunday, July 9-Saturday, August 19 (six weeks). Each week you log 120 minutes of reading, you will get to pick out a prize at the library OR get a raffle ticket to put in for a drawing from our prize baskets.

School summer reading lists will be available by July 1 at the library. You may check our summer reading section to see if we have the book you need or place it on hold through the SAILS network. You may also check Overdrive to see if your book is a downloadable audio or ebook.

Special Programming

Teen Photo Contest

Show off your photography skills! Students in grades 6-12 are invited to submit up to two photos on the theme of “My World.” Show us what it’s like to live in your world. Use your imagination, take a lot of great pictures, and and enter our contest.

SEND US YOUR STUFF: Photos must me emailed as JPEG attachments to [email protected],org with your NAME, GRADE in the fall of 2017, an EMAIL ADDRESS, and a PHONE NUMBER. We love photography tricks, but please limit yourself to minimal editing. Photos will be printed 4×6. The prize for the contest is a $50 gift card to GameStop. Voting will be done by the public, with the library staff reserving the right to break any tied votes.

SUBMISSION STARTS: Saturday, July 8  SUBMISSION ENDS: Saturday, July 29

VOTING STARTS: Thursday, August 3  VOTING ENDS: Monday, August 14 at 5pm  WINNERS ANNOUNCED: Wenesday, August 16

Plant Night for Teens

Thursday, July 20th, 4:00-5:00pm, grades 7-12, registration required

Create a tabletop terrarium with your friends! Small succulents will be provided, as well as all the supplies and decorations you will need for your tiny garden. We’ll have enough for everyone to make at least one terrarium. $5 materials fee offsets cost of supplies. Register here for Plant Night.

Davis Bates Concert: Songs & Stories to Build a Better World with Roger Tincknell

Tuesday, July 25th, 6pm, Community Room. All ages are welcome, no registration required.

This concert will include seasonal songs, just so stories, family stories and more.  Hear how the bear missed the train, how coyote got his howl, and about the bravery of a rainbow-colored parrot, and be prepared to sing, move and dance.  Learn how to play music with spoons from a kitchen drawer and meet a dancing wooden dog named Bingo. Co-sponsored by the Friends of the Norfolk Public Library and the Norfolk Recreation Department.

Movie Nights

Thursdays, July 27th and August 17th , 4:00-6:00pm, Community Room, all ages are welcome, no registration required.

7/27: Lego Batman Movie 8/17: Boss Baby

Come cool off and relax after a day out in the sun. Free popcorn and water will be provided. Please bring a blanket to sit on.

Anxious Teens, Worried Parents: Coping Strategies for Families

Tuesday, August 15, 6:30-8:15pm, Community Room, for teens and their families, no registration required

This presentation will help middle and high school students and their parents distinguish between typical teen worries and excessive, difficult-to-control worries. Participants will learn how to challenge or let go of unhelpful thoughts and to develop strategies to cope with stressful situations, such as taking exams, juggling extracurricular activities, managing friendships, and applying to college. Parents will learn how they can reinforce good coping without adding pressure to their teens.

About the Presenter:

Dr. Jamie Micco is a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice in Concord, Massachusetts and a Lecturer in Psychology at Harvard Medical School. For over a decade, she was a staff psychologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, most recently serving as the director of the Intensive Youth CBT Program. She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Boston University, where she completed her clinical and research training at the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders. Dr. Micco specializes in CBT for children, adolescents, and adults with anxiety disorders and depression. She recently published The Worry Workbook for Teens.
